Experiment 11 Assignment Postlaboratory Chemical Equilibrium Date Lab Instructor Name: Record each answer in the space provided. Show all work for full credit, include units, and report all answers to the correct number of significant figures regarding the absorbance 2. Assume the following reaction is at equilibrium. Describe how the reaction will respond to each of the following scenarios (shift toward products or reactants). Fe3+ SCN. FeSC N2+ FeSCN2+ s removed from the reaction More Fe3+ s added to the reaction More SCN- is added to the reaction 3. A reaction will reach the same equilibrium constant regardless of the initial concentration ofthe reactants. Is this what you observed in the experiment? Why or why not? 4. Why are the absorbance values different for tubes A, B, c, and D? 153Explanation / Answer
1.We know that A=e.B.C.
so if we increase B (path Length) the absorbance will increase also increase.
If we increase cuvette width rom 1 to2 , the absorbance will become double.
2. In this reaction yellow ferric and colorless thiocyanate ions reacts with each
other to give blood red colour. Note that if we are calculationg absorbance of colored species which is FeSCN2-
so if
If we remove FeSCN2+ the Absorbance will Decrese.
If Fe3+ Or SCN- is added to reaction the equllibrium will try to shift to right hand side(product side, Le chateliers principle.)
So absorbance will increase in two cases.
3. In equllibrium reaction both product and reactant adjust their concentration to equal proportion.
The equllibrium conc will be same despite different initial conc.
4. Absorbance values are different due to difference in concentration of given species.
