Question

1. Each time a mixture containing equal amounts of compounds A, B, C is injected into a gas chromatograph, compound B gives a signal that is only half the size of the signal from compound A, and compound C gives a signal that is twice the size of the signal from compound A. When another mixture of these same three compounds, but which does not necessarily contain equal amounts of each, is injected into a gas chromatograph the area of the signals from A, B, and C are 335, 234, 488 square units respectively. Calculate the percent of each component in this second mixture.
2. A mixture containing equal amounts of three compounds is injected into a gas chromatograph and the areas of the three peaks are 221, 471, and 132 square units. When another mixture containing these same three compounds, but not equal amounts of them, is injected into a gas chromatograph, the areas are 232, 328, and 266 square units. Calculate the % composition of this last mixture. (Hint: Do this just like #1 above, except that the correction factors aren't as simple)

Explanation / Answer

1. Composition of unknown mixture of A, B and C

total area = 335 + 234 + 488 = 1057

Percentage of A in the mixture = 335 x 100/1057 = 31.69%

Percentage of B in the mixture = 234 x 100/1057 = 22.14%

Percentage of C in the mixture = 488 x 100/1057 = 46.17%

2. Composition of unknown mixture of three component

lets say the components are X, Y and Z

total area = 232 + 328 + 266 = 826

Percentage of X in the mixture = 232 x 100/826 = 28.09%

Percentage of Y in the mixture = 328 x 100/826 = 39.71%

Percentage of Z in the mixture = 266 x 100/826 = 32.20%
