Question

Your team was performing study on particular matter collected from the air. The results from your experiment are provided below. An initial weight of dry filter used for experiment was 5.0150 g. After sampling in High Volume Air Sampler for 4 hours, filter was desiccated and reweighed. The final weight was 8.100 grams. The initial flow rate was 850 liters per minute and the final flow rate was 720 liters per minute. Calculate the concentration of particulate matter in the sampled atmosphere in micrograms per cubic meter (mu g/m^3). (We will make use of the conversation factor 10^4 mu g/g in the concentration calculation.)

Explanation / Answer

mfilter = 5.015 g

m filter after = 8.1 g

change in mass = 8.1 - 5.015 = 3.085 g

t = 4 h

dm/dt = 3.085/4 = 0.77125 g/h

Qinitial = 850 L/min

Qfinal = 720 L/min

Concentration of particles in microgram/m3

Assume average molar flow

Q = (850+720)/2 = 785 L/min

calcualte

for t = 4 hours = 785*60 = 47100 Liters in 1 hour

so..

Concnetraiton = 3140 g per hour... / 471000 L per hour

C = 3140 /471000 = 6.66666 g/L

change to micrograms --> 6.66666*10^6 / 10^3 = 6.66666*10^3 = 6666.66 micrograms per m3
