Question

Write a complete balanced equation for the reaction that occurs when the half cells are Cu|Cu^2+ and Ag|Ag^+. Explain how you knew which substance was being oxidized and reduced in each case. Describe a voltaic cell based on the following half reactions: Sketch the cell similar to the way it is shown in Figure 2 and indicate the followings: the cell potential for each half reaction, the anode/cathode, the overall cell reaction, the overall cell potential, which direction the electrons are flowing, and what you predict the reading on the voltmeter to be?

Explanation / Answer

According to Chegg website rules you will get the answer for the first question only.

1, the cell made with Cu/Cu2+ and Ag/Ag+ are shown below

Cu + 2Ag+  ----> Cu2+ +2 Ag

in the above cell Cu get oxidized to Cu2+ and Ag+ get reduced to Ag. Becuase oxidation is a kind of reaction where it looses electrons and reduction is gains the electrons.

The balanced half reactions for above cell are

Cu ----> Cu2+ + 2 e-

and 2Ag+ + 2e- ----> 2Ag
