Question
Based on your determined empirical formula for [NiCl_2(NH_3)_a], what is the coordination number of the nickel ion? Based on the elcctron configuration of the nickel ion and the coordination number stated above, what is the hybridization used by the Ni^2+ ion why? Explain your answer based on the electron configuration coordination number and what you know about the different types of hybridization. Do you expect the [NiCl_2(NH_3)_n] complex to be paramagnetic or diamagnetic? Use the answer to questions 1 and 2 to support your answer.Explanation / Answer
1) Coordination number is the number of atoms or ions immediately surrounding a central atom in a complex or crystal. Here all ligands are monodentate ligands. That means they join to the metal by one end. That indicates each contributes one to the coordination number. If it is a bidentate ligand it gives two to the coordination number.
[NiCl2 (NH3)2] - Coordination number is 4
2) Ni2+ is a d8 complex.

You need 4 orbitals for 4 ligands. All 3d orbitals are filled. Therefore next 4 orbitals can be used to make hybrid orbitals. That means one 4s orbital and three 4p orbitals. Hybridization is sp3.
3) if complex contains single electrons without pairing it is a paramagnetic one. If not it’s a diamagnetic one.so this is a paramagnetic complex.bcz in 3d orbitals have 2 unpaired electrons.
