Question
I already finished the homework for this section, but I had a small question about a certain problem I was working on. The problem asked you to create a molecular equation using the present reactants and to balance the equation. My reactants were: HCl(aq) + Hg2(NO3)2(aq). My balanced molecular equation was: 2 HCl(aq) + Hg2(NO3)2(aq) -> 2HNO3(aq) + 2 HgCl(s). I thought this version of the equation would be correct; however, mastering only accepted this version of the equation: 2 HCl(aq) + Hg2(NO3)2(aq) -> 2HNO3(aq) + Hg2Cl2(s). I don't really understand why it has to be written as Hg2Cl2. Could someone tell me why 2HgCl and Hg2Cl2 are not the same?
Explanation / Answer
The structure of Hg2Cl2 is as follows:
Hg2Cl2:
Cl -------- Hg -------- Hg ---------Cl
Here one Hg-Hg bond and it Hg2Cl2 Has Covalent Bond, While the structure of HgCl is same as NaCl with ionic bond.
Due to different bond formation both compounds are different
