Question

I need calculations, discussion and conclusion please Experiment 7: BOMB CALORIMETER 7.1 Aim. To determine the calorific value of a given fuel 7.2 Apparatus The Mahler bomb is a constant volume calorimeter consisting in a stainless steel autoclave with two electrodes and a discharge valve inserted on its head. A quartz crucible is set inside it on a proper support that is used to contain the material which heat of combustion is to be determined. The combustion is started using a Ni-Cr alloy wire that is tied to the electrodes and set into contact with the material contained into the crucible. The autoclave is submerged into the water stored into a steel tank that is inserted into a calorimeter. 7.3 Theory The Mahler bomb calorimeter is a calorimeter working at constant volume. For the First Principle of Thermodynamics: 7.1 With no work (mechanical and electrical), the only contribute to the inner power variation of the system is provided by the heat produced in the combustion reaction. So, the following relation is true: AUv Qv............7.2 As the temperature variation of the calorimetric system in the reaction is much contained. we can omit the dependence the thermal capacities on temperature and Cv.AT

Explanation / Answer

Calculating CV of calorimeter using the equation 7.5,
Cv = [ Ubenz.acid mbenz acid,pill +  UNi-cr mNi-cr(burned wire) ] / T
Ubenz.acid = -26.42 kJ/g ; UNi-cr = 5.86 kJ/g
Cv = [ (-26.42) kJ/g * 0.5051 g + (5.86) kJ/g * 0.0121 g ] / (23.5-22.2)oC
Cv = -10.2106 kJ / oC
The Calorific value of the calorimeter is -10.2106 kJ/oC
Heat produced in the combustion reaction is the calorific value of the fuel,
Qv = Cv  T
Calculate this and conclude your result
