Question

Answer all parts of the questions. Consider the following reaction which is at equilibrium: 3 H_2(g) + N_2 (g) 2 NH_3 (g), delta H degree = -92.2 kJ In which direction will the react reaction shift if? the pressure is increased at constant temperature the pressure is decreased at constant temperature, a the temperature is increased at constant pressure the temperature is decreased at constant pressure a catalyst is added at constant temperature and pressure Consider the reaction: N_2O_4(g) 2 NO_2(g) If the total pressure in an equilibrium mixture at 25 degree C is 2.5 atm, what is the partial NO_2 given that K_p is 0.113?

Explanation / Answer

10.

a.

If pressure increases, according to lechatlier's principle the equilibrium will shift to product side, because by increasing of pressure the equilibrium will shifts to higher number of gaseous molecules to lowest number of gaseous molecules.

b.

If pressure decreases, the equilibrium will shifts to reactant side. which is just opposite to above.

c.

The given reaction is exothermic reaction., i.e., the formation of products is favoured by the release of energy and the backward reaction is endothermic i.e., energy is abosrbed in the form of heat.

If temperature is increases, the equilibrium will favours backward direction i.e., it shifts to left

d.

if temperature decreases, the equilibrium will favours forward direction i.e., it shifts to right.

e.

By adding of catalyst, there is no change in the equilibrium, just it enhances the rate of reaction by lowering its activation energy.
