Question

Using Figure 1 to answer this question. Assume that the storm moves due east over the next several days. How would temperature, dew-point temperature, and wind speed and direction and dominant air mass in Chicago, IL, change after the warm front passes through? Be sure to discuss each item (e.g. temperature, dew-point, temperature).

Use Figure 2 to answer this question. How does the amount of rain recorded across Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois compare with the amount of rain recorded across Wisconsin, Michigan? Which type of front produced the heaviest rain? The lightest rain? Relate your answers to the properties of warm and cold fronts.

Explanation / Answer

How would temperature, dew-point temperature, and wind speed and direction and dominant air mass in Chicago, IL, change after the warm front passes through?

Warm front (Red)

A warm front is the transition zone where a warm air mass is replacing a cold air mass. The direction warm fronts is from southwest to northeast.A warm front is warmer as behind this front there is warm air contains more moisture than the air ahead. So when a warm front passes through a place, the air at that place becomes significatly warmer and more humid than before. Let us take some parameter which chenges after warm front passes

1. Temperature --------------------------- steady rise, and after passing becomes warmer than steady.

2. dew-point temperature ------------- will be steady while passing but after passing will rise then become steady.

3.wind speed and direction------------ while passing it is variable but after passing generally from south or southwest direction

4. dominant air mass ------------air mass will be warmer i.e lighter

**Before the front arrives, the air typically feels less humid than after the warm front passes through.

Which type of front produced the heaviest rain?answer cold front

Warm front produced the lightest rain

**If warmer air is replacing colder air, then it should be analyzed as a warm front. Similalry, If colder air is replacing warmer air, then the front should be analyzed as a cold front.
