Question

A catalyst is used in a sub-stoichiometricacmount. A common way to quantify the catalyst: limiting reactant ratio in a catalytic reaction is to quote the amount of catalyst used in mol%. For example 2 mol % means that the reaction useds 2% as much catalyst as limiting reactant.

A). Showing all work, calculate the mass of potassium bicarbonate required to use 20 mol% in the transesterification reaction.

B). Similarily, showing all work, calculate the mass of the catalyst precursor (9) required to use 10 mol% catalyst in the transesterification. Assume complete conversion of the carbene precursor (9) to active catalyst (3).

Explanation / Answer

For ther given reaction

Precursor 9 reacts with base KHCO3 working as a catalyst to form arbene active catalyst 3 specie.

A) Lets say we start with 1 moles of precursor 9

Than the moles of KHCO3 needed = 0.2 mol

mass of KHCO3 required = 0.2 x 100.115 = 20.023 g

B) Similarly, for the same reaction,

for 10mol% KHCO3 as catalyst

mass of KHCO3 = 10.016 g

moles of KHCO3 = 10.016/100.115 = 0.1 mol

moles of precursor 9 needed = 0.1 x 10 = 1 mol

mass of precursor 9 needed = 1 x 215.12 g/mol = 215.12 g
