Question
Procedure of lab: PART A- 1- Rinse out modified flask w/ 5 mL of acetone and dry flask with a medicine dropper connected to an spirator 2- Weigh empty dry flask. Use medicine dropped to add 5mL of unknown liquid to the flask. Attach cappilary 3- attach clamp to hold it while in water bath. Completely submerge flask in water trough. The water trough is heated on a hot plate in a larfe hood due to vaporization of flammable organic liquids. 4- Heat flask until liquid is completely vaporized. When liquid is gone record temp in trough and remove flask. Allow flask to cool. Read pressure from barometer in balance room. That is the pressure of your gas sample. 5- Upon cooling, sample will reliquefy. 6- Dry outside of flask, remove tip carefully. Weigh flask 7- repeat steps 2-6 four more times. PART B- 8- Rinse out flask with 5 mL of acetone. Dry with medicine dropper and aspirator. 9- Weight empty dry flask 10- Fill flask with distilled water from wash bottle. Pour some of the same water into a 100mL beaker and determine the temperature of the water using a glass thermometer. The density of water can be obtained from this table (Density of water at varying temperature and pressure). 11- Empty flask using medicine dropper connected to aspirator. 12- repeat steps 10 & 11!!!!! 13- repeat step 8 and return clean dry flask to lab instructor. PART C- Obtaining additonal data: 14- Get data sheet from your instructor which includes elemental analysis and liquid density for your unknown. WHAT ARE EXPERIMENTAL LIMITATIONS IN THIS LAB??
Explanation / Answer
In the given experiment, the experimental limitations lie in the measurement of accurate pressure change after the unknown liquid has been evaporated in the first stage.
The other major limitation in the experiment is in the measurement of the mass of flask with and without water in it for the density calculations.
