Please can someone solve this? I am having trouble. Thank you!!
4. Determining the Chemical Formula of a Hydrate. The following data has been collected by heating a sample CuxCly H2O and from rehydration and REDOX reaction using Al wire. Showing all calculations with properly labeled units determine the formula of the hydrate. Note: Not showing the work will result in no credit regardless of the correct formula Mass of Crucible 12.972 g Mass of Crucible and Hydrated Sample 13.968 g Mass of Crucible and Dehydrated Sample 13.762 g Mass of Empty Watch Glass 18.391 g Mass of Filter Paper 0.954 g Mass of Watch Glass, Filter Paper, and Copper 19.728 gExplanation / Answer
Hydrate mass = 13.968-12.972 = 0.996 g of hydrate
Dehhdrate sample = 13.762-12.972 = 0.79 g
mass of copper = 19.728 - (0.954 + 18.391) = 0.383 g
so..
mol Copper = mass/MW = 0.383/63.5 = 0.006031 mol of Cu
mass of H2O = 0.996 - 0.79
mol of H2O = 0.206/18 = 0.0114 mol of H2O
mass of Chlorine = 0.79 - 0.383 = 0.407
mol of Clk = mass/MW = 0.407/35.5 = 0.01146
relate Cu vs Cl
0.006031 / 0.01146 = 0.5
meaning that we have:
(CuCl2)*H2O
relate CuCl2 and H2O
0.0114 /0.006031 = 1.9 so 2
therefore
CuCl2* 2H2O
