Question
1a. How many moles of nitrogen gas are present in a 3.6 L cylinder stored at 25 degree C and 1.0 atm?
b. In a typical automobile, the fuel/air mixture in the cyliner is compressed from1.0 atm to 9.5 atm. If the volume of the cylinder chamber for the ncompressed gas is 850 cm^3, what is the volume of the chamber when the gas is fully compressed?
c. Given he following percent compositions by mass, determine the simplest formula fot the compound,
cA. 54.53% carbon, 9.15% hydrogen, 36.32 oxygen
cB. 95.63% carbon, 14.37% hydrogen
cC. 66.67% carbon, 11.11% hydrogen, 22.22% oxygen
Explanation / Answer
a)
V = 3.6 L
P = 1.0 atm
T = 25 oC = (25 + 273) K = 298 K
use:
P*V = n*R*T
1.0*3.6 = n*0.0821*298
n = 0.147 mol
Answer: 0.147 mol
b)
Pc = 9.5 atm
Vc = ?
Pu = 1.0 atm
Vu = 850 cm^3
use:
Pc*Vc = Pu*Vu
9.5*Vc = 1.0*850
Vc = 89.5 cm^3
Answer: 89.5 cm^3
