Question

Lab Report Assignment Chem 2111 Bromination of Stilbene Name Due date: Nov. 16 2016 1. Based on your last lab performance "Addition of A Halogen To An Alkene-Synthesis of Stilbene Dibromide', write a one page report, showing Object, theory, and conclusion. Include following in conclusion. a) What reagent should be used when "green chemistry' in mind? b) What is the advantage of this type of reaction? 10 pa gram of stilbene dibromide was produced with 90% yield, what was the starting weig diphenyl stilbene.

Explanation / Answer

1. Instead of using Br2, HBr + H2O2 has to be used. HBr is oxidised by H2O2 and produce Br2 in situ. Ethanol can be used as a solvent.

2. This type of reaction is much more evvironment friendly. The waste products of the reaction is much less hazardous. Also, due to in situ generation of Br2, all the Br2 will be consumed in the reaction (no loss during transfer of Br2 to the reaction mixture) ans waste will be minimum.
