Question
A new proposal has been placed on the legislation to reduce the alcohol level that will qualify for a DUI (driving under the influence penalty) from 0.08% to 0.04% in blood as detected with an alcoholimeter.
Determine the number of fluid ounces of an alcoholic beverage that contains 8% alcohol (v:v) that will cause a 120 lb person whose blood volume is 3.25 liters to receive a DUI infraction. Assume that only 35% of the alcohol is absorbed and can be detected in the blood. Do this determination for both the current value (0.08%) and the new proposal (0.04%)
Explanation / Answer
M = mol/V
V = 3.25 liters
for
0.08 --> 3.25*0.08/100 = 0.0026 liters of alochol = 2.6 mL of alcohol
only 0.35 is absorbed = 2.6 /0.35 = 7.428 mL of alcohol
a typical beer has 8% so..
7.428/0.08 = 92.85 mL
29.5735 mL = 1 oz
92.85 /29.5735 = 3.1396 oz of alcoholic beverage
ofr 0.04%, must be simple half --> 3.1396/2 = 1.5698 fluid oz of alcoholic beverage
