Answer the questions in order please.
Two experiments were conducted in Dr. Sharma's laboratory by students just like you. In the first experiment (picture below), a student (Agni) heated several small diamond crystals to 1200-1500 degree C using a propane torch. Instantly he realized his mistake, the diamond was no more and all that was left was black graphite. In the second experiment (picture below), another student (Heera) put a diamond in liquid oxygen and boiled it (she did not need a torch). To her amazement, Heera found that not only did the diamond disappear, there was nothing left in the crucible either! Fortunately, she had collected the gases coming off the boiling oxygen container and found lots of CO_2 in the collection jar. So she knew what had just happened to the diamond (lost forever). Which of the two experiments was an example of a phase transition? _____ (Agni/Heera). Explain why? _____ Explain why the other experiment is not a phase transition _____Explanation / Answer
Heera's experiment is an example of phase transition.
Because in a phase transition is commonly used to describe the transition between solid liquid and gaseous states of matter and in Heera's experiment the state of diamonds changed from solid to gaseous.
Agni's experiment was not a phase transition because the state of matter does not changed, although the diamond changed to graphite but both are solids so no change in states and hence no state transition.
