Explanation / Answer

4HCl + MnO2 -------------> MnCl2 + 2H2O + Cl2

36.5g 86.94g 125.84g (Molar masses)

4 moles or HCl react with one mole of MnO2 to give one mole of MnCl2 and two moles of water and one mole of Cl2

HCl: 41.5 g = 41.5/35.5 gmol-1 = 1.136 mole

MnO2: 41.3/86.94 gmol-1 = 0.475 mole

1.136 mole of HCl require 0.284 moles of MnO2. So we have excess of MnO2.

So the limiting reagent is HCl.

b. Theoretical yield of Cl2

4 moles or HCl react with one mole of MnO2 to give one mole of MnCl2 and two moles of water and one mole of Cl2

1.136 mole of HCl require 0.284 moles of MnO2 to produce 0.284 moles of Cl2 or 71.0 g of Cl2.

b. 71.1% of Cl2 :

71.1/100 x 71 = 50.48g

50.48g of Cl2 is produced
