Question
Part 1:
Which of these statements is/are true? Rewrite each false statement to make it true.
The surface tension of CH3Br is greater than the surface tension of CH3Cl.
Water forms spherical drops on wax because the surface tension of water is greater than the adhesive forces between wax and water.
Part 2:
Acetone and ethanol were placed in two identical funnels at 25°C and allowed to flow freely. It was found that the ethanol took three times longer to drain than the acetone. Which of the two substances has stronger intermolecular forces?
Part 3:
What ions and/or molecules are present in relatively large proportions in the following solutions?
a solution of a strong base Ba(OH)2 (aq)
a solution of the soluble salt Ca(NO3)2(aq)
Part 4:
In which of the pairs listed below are both compounds strong electrolytes? Are any strong acids or bases?
NaCl and Sr(OH)2
HCl and C6H13OH
Explanation / Answer
Part 1 Both are correct.
CH3Br with higher molecular weight has more dispersion forces, thus more surface tension.
Water forms spherical drops due to its higher surface tension.
Part2:
Ethanol has stronger inter molecular forces, as it took more time to drain. Due stronger intermolecular forces , its surface tension is more and hence adheres moreto each other.
Part 3:
Strong base is a strong electrolyte thus dissociates almost completely hence Ba(OH)2 solution has Ba+2 and OH- ions in larger proportions.
All salts are strong electrolytes, thus Ca(NO3)2 also dissociates completely to give Ca+2 and twice nitrate ions.
Part 4:
The pair of NaCl and Sr(OH)2 is both strong electrolytes. Sr(OH)2 is relatively strong base.
In the pair HCl and C6H13OH only HCl is a strong electrolyte the other is non-electrolyte.
HCl is a strong acid and strong electrolyte.
