Question

: nssuime tar a given solution contains Ag' or Ba2 or a mixture of both. A reasonable method for doing a qualitative analysis on this solution might be sketched out as follows Remember lI means a precipitate forms and | means a solution remains. It is always assumed that solutions are separated from precipitates before adding the next reagent.) 2. Assume that a given solution contains Ag or Ba2 or a mixture of both. A reasonable Solution containing Agt and Ba* Na2SO4 What is the precipitate formed at X in the above scheme? (1pt) What is the identity of cation at Y in the above scheme? (1pt) What are two other solutions that could be used in the above scheme rather than Na SO, Explain (2 pts). a. b. C.

Explanation / Answer

a) precipitate formed = BaSO4 = X

    reaction : Ba+2 + SO4-2 -------------------> BaSO4 (s)

b) Y = compound = Ag2SO4 .

   cation in Y = Ag+

becuase of this separation BaSO4 solublity product is lesser than Ag2SO4 . so BaSO4 readily forms precipitate and Ag2SO4 is remains in the solution

C ) other two reagents for separation

   1 ) HCl

    2)   NH4CO3

with HCl , Ag+ forms precipitate

                  Ag+   + Cl- --------------------> AgCl

with NH4CO3 in basic medium Ba+2 forms precipitate

              Ba+2 + CO3-2 -------------------> BaCO3
