Question
A student in your class prepared his prelab correctly. In his prelab procedure, he had written to add 2.5 mL of concentrated HCI (that is added to the aqueous layer in the last paragraph of the procedure) to the reaction mixture after it was refluxed and transferred to a separator funnel. In regards to chemical reactions, explain what the consequence of this change will be. During the rest of the procedure, what product(s) go into which solutions, and what will ultimately be isolated from what solutions if the rest of the steps of the procedure from this point onward are done correctly?Explanation / Answer
a) You did not give the procedure to what reaction he added HCl. Let me explain generally why we need HCl after reaction. Some of the reactions are carried out with bases like LiAlH4, NaBH4, NaOH. In these reactions products are obtained as salts which are dissolved in water. Hence we have add acid to neutralize those reaction. If we add acid that will neutalize the base which is with organic product.
b) Normally when organic products with salts that are dissolved in water. Once we add acid that will neutalize the base and organic products goes to organic layer . HCl and bases will be in aqueous layer. Organic layer can be concentrated to obtain as pure products.
If possible let me know what reaction student have done. i will detaily explain what will happen
