Question

Does drying agent such as calcium chloride, react with target product n butyl bromide, if left overnight to dry? Ex. Organic layer containing n butyl bromide was extracted and dried with calcium chloride, but drying agent and product were left overnight in a flask. Does drying agent such as calcium chloride, react with target product n butyl bromide, if left overnight to dry? Ex. Organic layer containing n butyl bromide was extracted and dried with calcium chloride, but drying agent and product were left overnight in a flask.

Explanation / Answer

Anhydrous calcium chloride can be used to dry target product n butyl bromide. The anhydrous calcium chloride is a drying agent and removes any remaining water along with residual ethanol (if used). As CaCl2 is an ionic compound it would not dissolve in any organic solvent (hence not in butyl bromide) and no reaction will take place even after keeping overnight.
