Question
Q1) When 250 mL of hot water is added to a container with 250 mL of cold water we
expect the final temperature of the mixture to be half way between the initial temperatures of the hot and cold water.
a) Explain why this is true.
b) If you try this experiment you will observe that the final temperature is closer to the initial temperature of the cold water than half-way between the two temperatures. Explain this observation. (Note: the answer is NOT that you don't have a perfect system. This same thing happens in the lab with good equipment.)
Explanation / Answer
a) yes it is true, because the extra heat energy possed by hot water will transfer it to cold water, upto reaching to equilibrium temperature between them.
b) experimentally while transferingheat from hot water to cold water, some amount of heat will be transfered to surroundings.so that, the final temperature is nearer to initial temperature of the cold water than half-way between the two temperatures.
