Question
3:49 LTE Experiment 9: Qualitative Analysis...r 3. You carry out the three classification reactions on your second unknown salt sample. You make the observations given below for each classification reaction. Classification Rxn Observations Rxn with Ba2 (aq) Addition of BaCl, No observable change Rxn with Ag (aq) Addition of AgNO,-precipitate forms Addition of HNO, precipitate does not dissolve What possible anion(s) may be present in the second unknown salt sample? Describe the steps and expected observation (s) for the confirmation reaction for each anion identified as possibly present in the second unknown salt sampleExplanation / Answer
The possible anions could be chloride, bromide or iodide.
These halide ions react with the AgNO3 solution to give precipitations of AgCl, AgBr or AgI
To differentiate these ions, you can add NH4OH
If ppt is curdy white and dissolves on adding nh4oh, then it is chloride. It is further confirmed by chromyl chloride test
If tgetppt is pale yellow and is sparingly soluble in nh4oh, then it is bromide which is further confirmed by globule test (ccl4+cl2water)
If the ppt is yellow and is insoluble in nh4oh, then it tells that it is iodide ion
