Post-Laboratory Questions nt wwe given only one greduated qylinder to une for this experiment. After uning it to mensure es a result of using only one gradunted cylinder for the ne Would the calculated be igher, lower, or the 2 Replain how the following changes In the procedure for thls experiment would affect the results ) A glass beaker was used instead of a prensed polystyrene cup. (2) A pressed polystyrene top was used to cover the polystyrene cup after the acld and base solutions had been mixed.Explanation / Answer
1)
The calculated heat of neutralization will be higher than the the literature ?Hneutzn .
Because themeasured solution is more than the 50.0 mL that leads to theliberation of more amount of heat during the neutralization.
Let us assume X kJ of haet is released when50.0 mL of solution is neutralized.
If we measured 50.5 mL instead of 50.0 mL then theamount of heat is released
= 50.5 mL *X kJ/50.0 mL
= 1.01 X kJ
2)
1)
Because it insulates. To measure the heat of neutralization, the heat absorbed or released by the reaction are measured by a change in temperature. If heat is released into the room through the container, the measurement won't be accurate. The better insulated, the better.
2)
As the reactants and any solvent were ionic and water respectively, nothing. If there was an organic component to the reaction mix, it would depend on what that organic component was - it could dissolve the cup.
