Question
A. Iron metal is produced from iron (III) oxide in the following reaction. What is reducing agent in this reaction?
Fe2O3 + 3C ? 2Fe + 3CO
B. When the equation below is balanced, the coefficient for HNO3 is:
Al(OH)3 + HNO3 ? Al (NO3)3 + H2O
C. What is the coefficient of magnesium in the redox reaction below? (the reaction is unbalanced)
Mg + FeCl3 ® Fe + MgCl2
D. A sample of the antacid Amphojel containing of Al(OH)3 is titrated with HCl. How much Al(OH)3 is in the original sample if 192 ml of 0.1 M HCl are required to neutralize the sample? Write a balanced equation for the reaction. Give your final answer in grams of Al(OH)3.
Explanation / Answer
A.) oxidation state of Fe is reduced to 0 from +3. So, it reduced then reducing agent is carbon in the given reaction.
B.) Balance equation -- 3 HNO3 + Al(OH)3 ? Al(NO3)3 + 3 H2O
so, the coefficient of HNO3 = 3 in balanced reaction.
C.) Balanced equation -- 3 Mg + FeCl3 = Fe + 3 MgCl
coefficient of magnesium in the redox reaction = 3
D.) Balanced equation--- AL(OH)3 + 3 HCl = ALCl3 + 3 H2O
mmol of HCl = 192 x 0.1 = 19.2 mmol
mmol of Al(OH)3 = 19.2/3 = 6.4 mmol
mass of Al(OH)3 = 6.4 x 10^3 x 78 gram = 0.499 gram
