Question

1. Consider the reaction: a. Calculate K for the reaction Will Ba504 precipitate if Na,sO, is added to a saturated solution of BaF,? Explain. Pick either #2 or "3 and answer the question. Please show all work. fore lead in paint was discontinued, lead chromate was a common pigment in yellow paint. A chromate a. Will a precipitate form? 2. Bef 1.0 L solution is prepared by mixing o.50 mg of lead nitrate with 0.020 mg of potassium b. What should the [Pb"] be to just start precipitation? 3. A town adds 2.0 ppm F ion to fluoridate its water supply. (Fluoridation of water reduces the incidence of dental caries.) If the concentration of Ca" in the water is 3.5 x 10 M, will a precipitate of CaF, form when the water is fluoridated? What would the concentration of F ion be to just start precipitation?

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

1A).

Given reaction is:BaF2(s) + SO4-2 <=====> BaSO4(s) + 2F(aq)

In Solybility there are 2 terms

1.Solubility Product(Ksp)

Solubility Product of a sparingly soluble compound is defined as product of active masses of it,s ion present

in solution at equilibrium.

2)ionic product

ionic product is defined as product of active masses of it,s ion present in solution any time.

Now come to the point, we have to find value of K for given reaction

BaF2(s) + SO4-2 <=====> BaSO4(s) + 2F(aq)

K=[F(aq)]2/[SO4-2]

Solution1.b)

we have given saturated compound and in saturated compund Ksp=Ionic product

Now we are adding Na2SO4 to the solution of BaF2.

Ionic product of BaSO4- =[Ba+2][SO4-2]

So on addind Sodium Sulphate concentration of SO4-2 increaes hence ionic product increases.

And if ionic product is more than Solubility product PPT will form.
