Question
1) The following table provides some thermodynamic information for magnesium and fluorine. [20 points total] Mg(s) Mg(g) Mg(g) Mg"(g) (g) 2 F(g) F(g) F(g) AH (kJ mol) +146 +9922 +158 -328 a) Calculate the lattice energy of MgF,(s). (As a reminder the equation that corresponds to the lattice energy is Mg"(g) + 3 F(g) MgF3(s).) The solid state structure is unknovn and the Mg3-F distance is 1.77 Å. [6 points] b) Please use the calculate lattice energy from part a as well as the data provided in the table above to calculate ,"for MgF3 (Mg(s) + 3/2 F2(g) MgF,6). [10 points]Explanation / Answer
For the above reaction perform following calculations
eqn 1 + eqn 2+ (3/2)* eqn 3 + 3* eqn 4
H= (146)+(9922)+(1.5 * 358) +(3 * -328)
H = 9621 KJ
Lattice energy of MgF3 = 9621 KJ
Since lttice energy is positive this means formation of this needs energy to be supplied. So this means that energy of product> energy pf reactant.
So this is not a stable form of Mg and F
