The heat gained by the water in calorimeter = The heat lost by the metal

Heat gained by the water, Qwater= Mass X specific heat of water X Temperature difference

= 40 g X 4.179 Jg-1C-1 X (26.9-26.3) C [ Specific heat of water is known to be 4.179 Jg-1C-1]

= 100.296 J

Heat lost by Metal = Mass X Specific heat of metal X Temp difference

= 18.8 g X Specific heat X (84.5-26.9) C

= 1082.88 g C X Specific heat

According to law of conservation of energy, 1082.88 g C X specific heat = 100.296 J

Therefore, Specific heat of metal = 0.093 J g-1 C-1
