The observed terms of the types and boiling point of HF is 293 K. Explain the failure of the student's prediction i strengths of the intermolecular forces that exist among HF molecules. (c) A representation of five molecules of HBr in the liquid state is s hown in box 1 below, In box 2, draw a has occurred. representation of the five molecules of HBr after complete vaporization Box 2 Box 1

Explanation / Answer

(a)

There exists dipole - dipole interactions among the moleucles of HCl, HBr and HI. As we go down the group the atomic weight of Cl, Br , I will increase gradually and hence the strength of interactions will also increase.

(b)

It is because of the presence of strong intermolecular hydrgoen bonding among HF molecuels which is not possible among the molecules of HCl, HBr and HI

(c)

In vapour state the distance between the molecules to be far apart.
