SUPPLEMENTARY LAB QUESTIONS 1. Would you expect benzoic acid or anisole to be a more effective coupling reagent? Why? 2. Most diazo coupling reactions do not work well in acidic solutions. Explain. 3. What two starting compounds would be used to prepare Azo Violet? Below pH 11 azo violet appears yellow in color. Above pH 13, the dye appears violet in color. Explain 4. For most students, an instantaneous and dramatic color change occurs when the two coupling reagents are mixed together. Why does this occur? 5. Most of our UV solutions have been prepared using isopropanol as solvent. azo dye UV solutions prepared under aqueous conditions? Why are the 89

We would solve each question for you , but they should be posted separately...Happy to help .

Here i am solving only the first question !!

1) Anisole is a better coupling reagent then benzoic acid, because for coupling reaction the aromatic ring should be electron rich, -OCH3 on anisole release electron towards benzene ring by +M effect.

It makes it electron rich.

Whereas in Benzoic acid -COOH group withdraws electron benzene ring making it electron defieicient and unfit for coupling..
