Explanation / Answer

a) Tungsten (W) which has atomic number 74 has following electronic configuration

[Xe] 4f14 5d4 6s2

b) valence electrons = 4 (in d subshell) + 2 (in s subshell)

So, valence electrons = 6

c) core electrons in Tungsten = atomic number - valence electron

= 74 - 6

= 68

d) it generally form a cation, and when doing so, it loses a electron, so nuclear charge now attracts the electron cloud more strongly, which leads to decrease in size of the cation. Therefore cation will be smaller in size than neutral atom.
