Question
How to determine percentage of isomers given IR of product obtained
my lab requires i find the percentage of ortho, para or meta toluene based on the c-h out of plane present in my IR spectrum. i have no idea how to figure this out.
the integration value for the p-bromotoluene is 722.87
the integration value for the o-bromotoluene is 435.76
there is no meta
it appears theres toluene around 729 and that integration value is 277.32
how do i figure out how much of each is present? the theoretical yield was 1.37g and i had .71 g (51.82% yield)
Explanation / Answer
The integration value of the peaks of an FTIR spectrum gives a measure of concentration of the species ,according to the Beer's law, -Concentration of an Analyte is proportional to its Absorbance (measured by integral trace)
So ,Ratio of concentration of toluene : o-bromotoluene :p-bromotoluene=277.32:435.76:722.87
Dividing by the smallest number, 1:1.6:1.6
% toluene=(1/(1+1.6+2.6))*100=19.2%
% o-bromotoluene=(1.6/(1+1.6+2.6))*100=30.8%
% p-bromotoluene=(2.6/(1+1.6+2.6))*100=50%
