Question
1)A compound with the formula C6N2H7ClO2was treated with hydrogen gas over a Raney nickel catalyst and a new material, C6N2H13ClO2, was formed. How many pi bonds and/or rings did the original compound have? (please explain how you got the answer)
2)A given compound has the molecular formula of C6H6. After being treated with hydrogen gas and a trace of palladium metal, a compound with the formula C6H12is formed. How many pi bonds and how many rings were in the originalmaterial.
3) Determine whether the alkene below has an E or Z configuration. (explain)
F O Br ?(CH3)3Explanation / Answer
1.In the cas of C6N2H7ClO2 , the compound contains three double bonds or pi bonds which adds three H2 molecules on hydrogenation and hence the compound formed on hydrogenation has six hydrogen atoms more than the original compound.
2. The compound with molecular formula C6H6 can be benzne ring which adds three molecules of hydrogen to form cyclohexane having molecular formula C6H12. One ring with three pi bonds present in the compound.
3. The configuration of the given alkene is Z as the groups with higher priorities that is F and (C=O)-CH2-CH2-CH3 are on the same side of the double bond and groups with lower prority (-C(CH3)3 and -CH2-CH2-CH3 )also lies on the same side of the double bond.
