Question

6. Answer the following questions about electrochemical cells. Assume that any given Eo values are for reduction half reactions. Does a positive value for the E° of a reaction signify that reduction is easier or that oxidation is easier? What about a negative value of the E° for a reaction - does this reflect easier reduction or easier oxidation? In a battery, does oxidation or reduction take place at the anode? Which half-reaction will be the reaction that takes place at the anode, the half-reaction with the more positive E or the half-reaction with the less positive E°? Why? a. b. c. d. To the right is a diagram of a galvanic cell. Based on the E values listed below: label the anode and the cathode; draw an arrow indicating the direction of electron flow through the lightbulb; and indicate the direction that the K* and the NO3 in the salt bridge will move. i. ii. iii. Au Au Au(aq)eAu (s) E1.692 V Pb?+ (aq) + 2 e. ? Pb (s) E9s.0. 126V

Explanation / Answer

Answer a - The positive value for E0 denotes the more easier reduction because ?G0 will be more negative.

The negative E0 denotes the more easier oxidation.

Answer b - In a battery oxidation will take place at the anode.

Answer c - Half reaction with less E0 value will take place at anode because Ecell = E0cathode - E0anode

and ?G0 = -nFE0cell. Thus the less positive value of E0anode will give more positive value for E0cell, which corresponds to more negative value of ?G0 and will be more feasible.

Answer d -

Au+/Au will be at cathode and Pb+2/Pb will be at anode.

ii) Electron flow will be from Pb to Au

iii) K+ will move towards Au and NO-3 will move towards Pb
