Question

1. NASA’s remote investigation of the surface and subsurface of Mars is ongoing. One of the research questions involves determining whether conditions needed to support life are (or were) present on Mars. One of the key requirements is liquid water. One of the first pieces of evidence of water on Mars has been the location of hydrates among the minerals on the planet’s surface. Explain how this information could be useful.

2. In what ways do we use materials that can form hydrates in medical or commercial applications? Any ideas? Do not assume that a product that has words such as “hydrate”, hydrated” or “hydrating” in its name or description is technically a hydrate in the sense used in this lab. A shampoo, for example, may claim to leave the hair hydrated, but that is a different use of the word.

Explanation / Answer

A. It helps the scientists to know more about the environment dwelling out there and is fit to stay there or not.it can even contribute to understand Martian environmental change and geological evolutions.

B. It can be done by producing the hydrocarbon that avoid hydrate formations or by using inhibitors ie environmental, themordynamic and kinetic inhibitors.
