Question

Lab 19 Vapor Pressure, boiling point and salting Prelab Exercises for Lab 19 Name Section For compounds that have similar properties what would you predict the order Date 1. of increasing vapor pressures of the following compounds? CH4 H20 CH20H KCI(aq) 2. Circle the liquid should have the strongest intermolecular force. Put a box around the one that should have the highest vapor pressure? For the following, arrange the compounds in the order of increasing boiling point. Explain why you put them in that order. H2S, H2Se, H20, HaTe 3.

Explanation / Answer

We know thart the boiling point increase mrom moving top top to bollom in the periodic table, So according to the rule the order will be H2O > H2S> H2Se >H2Te. But in reality the order is H2S > H2Se > H2O>H2Te

This is due to the strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding in water, which make the higher molecular aggregation, hence the effective molecular weight will increase which again increase the boiling point of Water
