Question
CHEM 104 Homework 7 2. 15 points-Ch. 19.3 The picture at the right shows a saturated solution of Na COs with a small excess of solid (white pile) present. Suppose a small seed crystal of Naz"CO, (where C is a radioactive isotope of carbon) is added to the mixture (small cube in the picture) and the radioactivity is measured over time. a. Would you expect radioactivity to be present in the solution? Explain. Would you expect radioactivity to be present in all of the solid or only in the seed crystal? Explain. b.Explanation / Answer
Radioactivity will be present in solution as well as in all the solid along with seed crystal. 14C isa radioactive isotope of carbon, they are beta emitter (There are three types of emitter elpha emitter, beta emitter, gamma emitter). In beta decay the high energy electrons are emitted from the nucleus as a result the radioactivity will be present in solution as well as whole solid.
