Question

Very few chemical reactions go to completion. Part A Instead, most reach a state called chemical equilibrium in which both products and reactants are present. The concentrationslactivities of reactants and products can be predicted using the equilibrium constant, K, which is a mathematical expression based on the chemical equation. For example, in the following reaction A solution initially contains A, B, and C in the following concentrations: [A] 0.650 M, B] 0.950 M, andC 0.550 M.The following reaction occurs and equilibrium is established: At equilibrium, [A] 0520 M and C0.680 M.Calculate the value of the equilibrium constant K. Express your answer numerically View Available Hint(s) where a, b, c, and d are the stoichiometric coefficients, the equilibrium constant is where (A). (B) (C), and (D) describe the equilibrium activities (i.e. in ideal solutions: concentrations divided by 1 molt). If the reaction is not at equilibrium, the quantity can still be calculated, but it is called the reaction quotient, Q instead of the equilibrium constant, K K8.03 Submit Incorrect: One attempt remaining: Try Again

Explanation / Answer

A       +   2B       <—>    C

0.650       0.950           0       (initial)

0.650-x   0.950-2x       x       (at equilibrium)

At equilibrium,

[A] = 0.520

so,

0.650-x = 0.520

x = 0.130

So,

[B] = 0.950-2x

= 0.950 - 2*0.130

= 0.690

Now use:

Kc = [C] / ([A] [B]^2)

= 0.680 / (0.520 * 0.690^2)

= 2.75

Answer: 2.75
