ADVANCE STUDY ASSIGNMENT 1. 1. Complete the following table, including the condensed formulac ofthe acidic compounds, the molecular weights, and the Kavalues. State your source(s). Acid: Acic Potassium hydrogen CsHsKO4 phthalate ormula Molecular Weight Molecular weight 204.222 g'mol 3.91 x 10 Potassium hydrogen KHSO sulfate 136.162 g 1.07 x 10 1.34 x 10 116.072 g Or 1.48 x 10-2 Potassium dihydrogern KH PO 136.084 6.3 x10-8 Citric 192.1 Or 7.4 x 10 Other non-standard names include potassium bisulfate or potassium acid sulfate, Kxalue is equal to that of the second acid ionization constant, for sulfuric acid.

Explanation / Answer

Ka ie dissociation constant is the measure of dissociation of a compound into an aqueous solution.

And it is generally given for a reaction like:

AB(aq) <--------> A+........ +......... B-

Ka = [A+] [B-] / [AB]

Where [A+] , [B-], [AB] = equilibrium Concentration of A+, B- and AB.

So, Ka for the above compounds are:

Potassium hydrogen phthalate = 3.9 * 10^-6

Potassium hydrogen sulfate = 1.2* 10^-2

Maleic acid =  1.5 * 10^-2, 2.6 * 10^-7

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate = 6.3 * 10^-8

Citric acid = 7.1* 10^-4, 1.7* 10^-5, 6.4 * 10^-6

Note: citric acid and maleic acid are polyprotic acids, so they have multiple ka values.
