Question
If you add 100 g of solid water (ice) at 0.0oC to 100 g of liquid water at 100oC, what can you say about the system when it comes to equilibrium?
A.The system is liquid water and its temperature is between 50oC and 100oC.
B.The system is liquid water and its temperature is between 0.0oC and 50oC.
C.The system is liquid water and its temperature is exactly 50oC.
D.The system is solid water (ice) and its temperature is exactly 50oC.
E.The system is solid water (ice) and its temperature is between 0.0oC and 50oC.
why is the answer B
Explanation / Answer
Heat needed to melt the ice = m*L = 100*334 = 33400 J
Heat released by cooling of water to 00C = m*C*dT = 100*4.184*(100-0) = 41840 J
So the heat released is greater than the heat needed for melting. So all the ice will melt before the temperature of water drops to 00C. Hence the final temperature will remain somewhat between 0 and 500C.
So, The system is liquid water and its temperature is between 00 and 500C
Hope this helps !
