Question

A student heated a hydrated salt sample with an initial mass of 4.8702g, after the first heating, the mass had decreased to 3.0662g (A) if the sample was heated to constant weight after reheating, what is the minimum mass that the sample can have after the second weighing? Show how you determined your answer. (b) the student determined that the mass lost by the sample was 1.8053. What was the percent water in the original hydrated sample? Show calculation setup.

Explanation / Answer

a) As we can see that the difference in mass after first heating is :

delta m = 4.8702 g - 3.0662 g = 1.804 g

thus

after second heating , mass could be = 3.0662 g - 1.804 g = 1.2622 g

b) we have

final mass of sample = 1.8053 g

and

initial mass of sample = 4.8702 g

thus

water in sample = 4.8702 g - 1.8053 g = 3.0649 g

and

% water in the sample = ( mass of water / total mass of sample) x 100

....................................= ( 3.0649 g / 4.8702 g ) x 100

....................................= 62.93 %
