Question

4. Why were they retained? 5. Fresh water (like in Lake Michigan) has a very low concentration of dissolved materials in it. So it has a low osmotic pressure. Fresh water ponds and lakes may have single celled organisms living in them. Blood plasma has a lot of material dissolved and colloidally suspended in it, food, proteins, hormones, ions, waste, gases, etc. Would you expect fresh water ponds and blood plasma to have the same concentration of dissolved materials? Which would you expect to have the higher concentration, blood plasma or a pond? Would the isotonic solution for human blood cells be the same as an isotonic solution for a single-celled pond organism? 6. Identify the following solutions as being hypotonic, isotonic, or hypertonic to blood cells: otnic a) Water (H20) b) 0.9% NaCl c) 10% glucose d) 3% NaCl e) 0.2% NaCl Hyee tonic ertoniS

Explanation / Answer

5) Fresh water have very low concentration of dissolved materials. It creates a hypotonic environment for aquatic organism. Fresh water is naturally occuring water on the Earth's surface in ponds, icebergs, groundwater etc. Blood plasma contain a lot of dissolved materials like glucose, eletrolytes, proteins etc. Both fresh water ponds and blood plasma have different concentration of dissolved materials in them. Blood plasma have more concentration of dissolved materials. But nowdays due to various human activities, it might be true that ponds can also have high concentration of dissolved materials, some of them can be very harmful ones.

No, isotonic solution for human blood cell would not be same as an isotonic solution for single cell organism. Pond water is hypotonic for aquatic organism. Blood plasma is isotonic for human red blood cell which contain lots of dissolved materials. If single celled organism is placed in blood plasma, cell will shrink or get swell because it is not isotonic for it.

6) a) Hypotonic

b) Isotonic

c) Hypertonic

d) Hypertonic

e) Hypotonic
