Question
Shown below are active sites from several protein-based enzymes in the human body. For each of them identify the amino acids present (the side chains are shown) and the type of interactions/intermolecular forces (see page 573 of the textbook) possible for each amino acid within the active site in the table provided then answer the question if there is one. Enzyme 1: Itable is 2 pts 3 H2N 0 NH2 B o NH2 NH2 To NH Site Amino Acid Interactions 1. Which of the two molecules shown next to the enzyme would you expect Enzyme 1 to have as a substrate and why? Be specific! [1 pt]Explanation / Answer
1,3 and 4 could be Arginine
2 is histidine
5 could be some derivative of glutamine or Asparagine
For all these amino acids, the possible interactions are H-bonding and ionic interactions
Out of the two given substrates, 1 would fit in the active site as it as several acid groups which can be suitably placed by H-bonding and ionic interactions with the amine groups of different amino acid side chains in the active site of the enzyme.
