Question

Question 1 Not yet Calculate the cell potential for a cell with copper as the anode and zinc as the cathode. Look up the standard cell potentials and the formula in the Electrochemical Cell experiment. Points out of 1.00 Flag question Select one: a. +0.762 V b. +1.114 V C. 1.056 V d. +0.34 v e. 0.762 V f. 0.42V g. 1.104 V Question 2 Not yet answered Points out of 1.00 Which of the following are examples of endothermic reactions? Select one or more a. Boiling water b. Melting Icecube c. Coldpack d. Heatpack Flag question

Explanation / Answer

From standard reduction potential table, we can see that

Reduction potential of Cu i.e Cu2+ +2e --> Cu(s) , Eo =0.34 V

Reduction potential of Zn i.e. Zn2+ + 2e ---> Zn(s) ,Eo= -0.76 V

So copper is deposited on cathode and zinc on anode

Cell potential is calculated as

Eocell = Eocathode - Eoanode = 0.34-(-0.76) =1.1 V

Endothermic reactions are the one in which heat energy is absorbed .

For boiling water ,heat is required to boil and so endothermic reaction .

For melting ice cube, heat is released to surrounding and hence exothermic reaction.

For coldpack ,Heat is released and hence exothermic reaction.

For heatpack, heat is absorbed and hence endothermic reaction.
