Explanation / Answer

From the stoichiometric equation we can say

28 grams of CO reacts with 71 grams of Cl2 and produce 99 grams of COCl2 .

Given moles for COis 2.55×10-2. So weight is calculated by

Moles = weight/ molecular weight

I.e. Weight = 2.55×10-2× 28 = 0.74 grams

Similarly

Given moles for Cl2is 4.23×10-2

Weight = 4.23×10-2× 71.5 = 3.02 grams

For COCl2

weight = 0.122×99 = 12.078 grams

Checking equilibrium status of CO w.r.t. COCl2

99 grams of COCl2 should contain 28 grams of CO

12.078 grams of COCl2 contains how much CO

= (12.078×28)/99 = 3.416 grams.

The amount should be 3.416 grams but as per our given value it is 0.74 grams . The reaction not in equilibrium w.r.t. CO. Hence in order to be the reaction in equilibrium state, it shifts towards reactant side ( back ward).

Similarly,

Checking the equilibrium status w.r.t. Co2

99 grams of COCl2 should contain 71 grams of Cl2

12.078 grams of COCl2 contains how much Cl2

= (12.078×71)/99 = 8.662 grams.

The amount of Cl2 should be 8.662 grams but as per the calculation we have got 3.02 grams. So w.r.t Cl2 reaction shits towards left side.

The Reaction Quotient = 0.122/(2.55×10-2× 4.23×10-2) = 116.19.
