Topic 7 Quiz, Part II 1) Identify the type of the lipid and C) as polar or nonpolar. (1 point each) (1 point) and describe the three regions (A, B ApolarRegioa A C(CH2)CH-CH-CH-O B) nonpolar CHNHC(CH2)12CHs Region B CH3 I+ CH2-O-P-O-CH2CH2-N-CH3 9-polar Region C . CH3 What does the image below represent? (1.5 point). 2) Name or label and give the function of the regions B, C and D only. Labels (0.5 pt each): B) phospholipid b c)chelesterol o phopholipid Functions (1 pt each): B) isolates tre internal (onoponents of the cel fro extracelalar enviroment o prouides supports reduces permeabilrty for polar moleculesExplanation / Answer
1) The lipid given here is a phospholipid . It has a Phosphorous atom with four adjacent oxygen. But being more precise, we can call it a sphingolipid as there is an NHCO along with PO4. However, this classification is not generally used. So stick with phospholipids and do fill in the blank space.
The region B is also polar due to NHCO bond. Nitrogen and oxygen being electronegative induces polarity.
2) The image represents a membrane ( cell membrane). The part B is a lipid bilayer ( i only find lipid b on the image).
All other answers are correct. It will be better if you mention selective permeability as the primary function of cholesterol layer.
Hope this helps.!
