Question

Post-laboratory Assignment (page 3 of 3) The last two questions will be answered by using the data compiled from all of the lab groups The data should be recorded in the Summary of Class Data sheet (page 12) The class data is available on the Moodle website Compare the average molar enthalpies of neutralization obtained for the reactions of strong acids with NaOH with those found for weak acids with NaOH. Comment on the results (ie. are they the same or different) Also comment on how these results compare to the enthalpy of reaction calculated for HGaa)+ OH-(aq)-H20(0 (see question Sa) (3 pts.) 6. Compare the class average values for the molar reaction enthalpy for the reactions of the metal + HCI with the values predicted from the tabulated heats of formation (see question 5b and 5c). (3 pts.) 7. 16

Explanation / Answer

6)The enthalpy of neutralization of strong acid and strong base is constant and is equal.to -57.1kj.

This is because of arhenious theory of neutralization .

In this case the acid is completely ionized.

During weak acid neutralization, some amount of energy liberated would be utilized for ionizing the acid . Therefore value will be less than -57.1 kj .

Your values differ from these becaudbof experimental errors. This is what the real case is.

7) heat of formation of mg is -462 kj/mole

Heat of formation of ca is -543kj/mole

These values are standard.

Your experimental values are closer to these.
