Question
Experiment 17 The Double Five Solution Problenm The gosl if this lab is to observe and predict different types of double replacement resctions. Students need to be able to predict the outcome of double replacement reactions if the reactants are given. In this Lab students will also observe all kinds of different reactian which will allow the students to experience the d between observing a reaction in the laboratory and predicting the products thecretically Double replacement reactions: AB + CD AD + CB There are three different sets of bottles, a numbered set, and two different lettered sets Each set consists of five ditterent aqueous solutions The labels have fallen off the bottles but the numbers and letters remain. The solutions for each set is isted below: Set 12345: Mg, Po[NOsh. BaCb, Cu(No Cuso. Set ABCDE: KCI, Sr(NO )2 NaCH, Na CO, HC Prelab As a prelab you need to predict theoretically all the possible reactions which couid occur between the five solutions. As a template a table is given for each solution set. Inside the boxes write down what you expect to observe if you mix the two reactants. Below the table wrte an overall balanced equation for each predicted reaction. Obvlously if you do not expect a reaction you do not need ta write a You will need to do this for two different sets of chemicals As
Explanation / Answer
Set 1 :
CuSO4 (aq) + MgCl2 (aq) --------> CuCl2 (aq) + MgSO4 (aq) (Not a double replacement reaction)
CuSO4 (aq) + Pb(NO3)2 (aq) ------> Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + PbSO4 (s) (forms white ppt)
CuSO4 (aq) + BaCl2 (aq) -------> CuCl2 (aq) + BaSO4 (s)
CuSO4 (aq) + Cu(NO3)2 (aq) ------> NR
Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + MgCl2 (aq) --------> CuCl2 (aq) + Mg(NO3)2 (aq)
Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + Pb(NO3)2 (aq) -----> NR
Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + BaCl2 (aq) --------> CuCl2 (aq) + Ba(NO3)2 (aq)
BaCl2 (aq) + MgCl2 (aq) ------> NR
BaCl2 (aq) + Pb(NO3)2 (aq) -----> Ba(NO3)2 (aq)+ PbCl2 (s) (forms white ppt)
Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + MgCl2 (aq) -----> Mg(NO3)2 (aq) + PbCl2 (s)
