CHM126 Equilibrium and Instrumentation Spring 2018 Prelab: LeChatlier's Principle 1.) Consider Part A, point 3....predict whether the reactants or products would be favored for the reaction described, and provide an explanation (based on an analysis of Q v. Kg) to justify your prediction. Hint write O.ask yourself what part of the reaction is effected by the addition of hydroxide (ie what will hydroxide react with!) and go from there. actA oin hyelroide drop by drop with mixing afher cach dool il you ob sernc a chaExplanation / Answer
ANSWER:
Part A:
CrO42- + H3O+ -----> CrO72- + H2O
When NaOH is added to the solution the OH- ion furnished bt tje base will react with H3O+ to form water. Hence the concentration of reactants will decrease. So as per Le Chatliers principle backward reaction will be favourd to compensate the loss of reactants.
Q = [Product] / [Reactant]
At equilibrium Q = K
As the concentration of reactants decrease Q will increase. To bring Q back to the value of K (at equilibrium) product concentration must decrease.
