Explain how the tabulated standard reduction potentials (like those given in appendix L those given in appendix L of your book). of your book) can be used to determine the half-reactions that will occur at the cathode and anode of a galvanic cell when the relevant half-reactions are identified. Explain how changing the concentration of the cathode and anode solution affects the cell 3. potential, Eet compared to the standard cell potential, E ain You should address effects of the cathode ion concentration and anode ion concentration separately Explain how the signs of E° and 4Go are related and how the sign of E° relates to the magnitude of Keq (as in K >>1, K

Explanation / Answer

In a standar cell potential table you will find half celll equations with the form:

X + e === X-

Where X can be any element or ion.

these equations are normally arranged in a descending way where the half cell equation with the highest value will be the oxidizer

the other reaction that will be reduced must be inversed

So to find the E cell you have to apply the equation:

E cell = E cathode - E anode

E cell = E oxidation - E reduction

The oxidation will occur at the anode

The reduction will occur at the cathode

So typically for a pair of half cell reaction the half cell that appears on a higher level of the chart will be the oxidizing agent , an oxidizing agent is a substance that is capable of oxidize another substance.
